Ever wonder what all that hosting jargon you hear really means? To find out, just check out our glossary of terms below.

Active Server Pages - Active Server Pages (ASP) technology allows HTML pages to contain complex scripts that are executed at the server, allowing for dynamic pages to be created from data retrieved from databases or any other resources available to the server. You can write your own ASP scripts and execute them from your cgi-bin directory.

CGI-BIN access - All web accounts come with full access to their own cgi-bin directory. Your web site can be fully interactive by using the power of custom programs executed from your cgi-bin directory.

CGI script  - Used to supplement basic HTML to make your website more interactive and functional. Hit counters, guest books, order forms, and many other useful features can all be programmed in CGI scripts. We offer a free library of CGI scripts that you can use to enhance your web site. All of our plans come with its own local cgi-bin directory, where you can store custom cgi scripts that you may have written yourself or found else where on the web.

Data Transfer per Month - Each time a web page, image, audio, video, and other elements of your website is accessed by your visitor, traffic is generated. Your aggregate traffic is the sum of outward-bound, inward-bound, email, and anonymous FTP traffic.  Your monthly traffic allowance is calculated as 31 times the daily traffic allowance. Our daily data transfer allowances are high enough that most of our users stay within the limit. Traffic overage will be charged according the additional traffic pricing; see our additional items pricing page.

Dedicated IP - A paid service and is required to create Virtual FTP and use SSL on your web site. By default every domain has a Shared IP. A shared IP is free. You can change the type of IP at any time as you work with the site.  If you switch back from Dedicated IP to Shared IP, any FTP and SSL resources will be removed.

Directory Aliasing -  If you want different domain names to point to different directories of your web site, then you need DIR Aliasing. For DIR aliases, we assign a unique IP address and create a folder in your root directory, as the home directory of the DIR Alias. FTP connections and e-mails are routed to your main domain.

Example: http://www.newdomain.com points to http://www.primary.com/newdomain
E-mails sent to anyone@newdomain.com is routed to anyone@primary.com

Disk Space - Everything related to your website is stored on disk:

Web disk - your regular html files, images, multimedia files, anonymous ftp files, etc., it doesn't include disc space you have got allocated for mailboxes, MySQL and RealMedia.
*select
    - MySQL Databases, MySQL Database menu to see or change disk space quota for your MySQL Databases;
    - Mail Info, Mail Info menu to see or change disk space quota for your mailboxes, mail forwards, mailing lists and mail aliases.
You can always purchase additional disk space or decrease your disk space as required. To change your disk space, click either the Disk Space link or the Change icon.
When you set your quota to exceed the free amount, you are charged for this difference. To learn if you have any free disk space and its amount along with the range of prices, select Online Price in the Billing menu.

Domain Aliasing - This feature allows you to have multiple domain names pointed to a different domain, i.e. www.newdomain.com can redirect customers to www.primary.com. This redirection is entirely performed at the DNS-level, and does not involve any kind of CGI script. It's fast, reliable and will work with any type of web browser. And, because this feature is implemented at the DNS-level, all FTP and e-mail addresses associated with your alias will also be redirected as well.

Domain Name Registration - If you would like to have your own unique web address, we can register your domain name (e.g. www.mycompany.com) with OpenSRS or Network Solutions Inc. We can also transfer your existing domain name (if it is registered with Network Solutions - not including WorldNIC customers). If you are transferring a domain name from any other registrar, you will be responsible for contacting the appropriate registrar to coordinate the transfer. All new Domain Name registration fees will be billed to you separately. Domain registration fees start from US $19.50 for a one year term (.com, .net, .org), while other TLDs (.ca, .co.uk, .co.org, .cc) are priced individually. Registration does not confer immunity from any third-party concerns regarding the use or registration of the domain name.

Data Source Name (DSN) - DSN stands for Data Source Name. Data Source can be a database, spreadsheet, text file etc. We assign DSN to a data source so that irrespective of the data source details and location, we can use that data source; add, modify or delete records, just by knowing it's DSN.

E-mail Alias - With a virtual domain comes e-mail aliasing. All e-mail addressed to anything@yourdomain.com will be delivered to your e-mail box. You can use this feature to provide your customers with a variety of addresses to send their e-mail to, which in turn could help you sort out your incoming messages. You could have info@yourdomain.com for general questions, sales@yourdomain.com for orders and more.

E-mail Forwarding - The e-mail forwarding feature, which enables you to forward e-mails sent from various addresses to one specific e-mail box, is included in all of our hosting plans. You can consolidate all e-mails, business and personal, to your personal mailbox at your local Internet Service Provider so that you can retrieve them all from one location.

FTP Access - Used to upload and download your website between your own computer and our Web servers. You have unlimited FTP access to your account 24 hours a day 365 days a year, allowing you to set up, change, or maintain your web site at any time.

FTP sub-accounts - are created for Internet users authorized to enter your home directory on the server. With FTP sub-accounts they obtain full FTP permissions to your home directory or alternatively to the one assigned, but are not entitled to enter the control panel. No dedicated IP is required for FTP sub-accounts. Although each FTP sub-account is different from the original FTP 'account' login/password, both have the same ID.

FTP sub-accounts traffic is included in the Total/Summary traffic, however, you can always see how much FTP traffic has been run up by your 'FTP sub-users'. Also, you can set the limit for his traffic. To view/change your FTP sub-account settings click the Edit icon next to account name.

FTP Login -  used as a login to your site directory via FTP and to manage files in your home directory. It was generated by the system on the basis of your account name (also referred to as "account manager login", or "user name", or "user"). You cannot change it.

Mailing List - Mailing lists provide users with an effective and efficient method of communicating with a number of people in an e-mail environment. Whenever an e-mail is sent to a mailing list address, it is immediately forwarded to all members of that list. The member list is maintained by the moderator of the list. A mailing list is a great way for turning e-mail into a public forum or business tool.

Microsoft® FrontPage® 2002 - Microsoft® FrontPage® helps you easily create and manage professional-quality Stores without programming. Both new users and web development professionals will enjoy the ease in building and maintaining high-quality web sites in very little time. We provide FrontPage extensions free of charge in all of its hosting plans and encourages use of FrontPage® due to its ease of use.

Microsoft® FrontPage® Extensions - Microsoft FrontPage extensions allow you to connect to your Server directly with your FrontPage client and make the creation and maintenance of your Server much easier. They also allow you to use special FrontPage Bots, which can greatly enhance the functionality of your Web pages.

Parked Domain -  Use our DNS server but may or may or not be hosted with us.  People that buy their domain name can use our DNS servers to park their domain

POP3 e-mail Account - With POP3 e-mail accounts, you can retrieve all e-mails addressed to your domain on our server. With multiple POP3 e-mail boxes, you can have multiple addresses, such as yourname@yourdomain.com and yourfriendsname@yourdomain.com. You may also set up addresses for members of your staff, or divisions within your company, such as accounting@yourdomain.com or support@yourdomain.com.

Redundant Internet Connection - We have fully redundant connections to the Internet backbone with carriers; multiple fiber backbone providers with SONET fiber ring technology; multiple, redundant, physically diverse OC3 and DS3 connections.  Network connectivity to your hosting service will not be a concern.

Secure web site (SSL) - For security and privacy, all of your customers can take advantage of our Secure Socket Layer (SSL) service. By using this service, personal data such as credit card information transmitted through a secure (SSL) form will be fully encrypted en route to our secure server.

Setup fee  - the fee charged for configuring an account or an added account capability.  We do not charge a setup fee for configuring your hosting account.

Server Side Include (SSI) - allows your customers to use interactive real-time features such as echoing current time, conditional execution based on logical comparisons, querying or updating a database, sending an e-mail etc., with no programming or CGI scripts

Shopping Cart - Keeps track of what your customers have ordered from your Internet store. Customers add and remove items from their shopping cart, and tallies their order when they are ready to check out. If the customer decides to submit the order, the program emails the order information to the address of your choice and sends a conformation to the customer. We offer the osCommerce shopping cart software.

Sub Domain - A sub-domain is very similar to Directory Aliasing (DIR Aliasing), except that instead of www.newdomain.com pointing to www.primary.com/newdomain, www.newdomain.primary.com will point to www.primary.com/newdomain. The difference is you do not need another domain name. This allows you to select a sub-domain that will act as a prefix on your existing domain. For all sub-domains we will assign another IP address and directory in your domain to be used as the home directory of your sub-domain's web site.

NOTE: Sub-domains are very popular in situations where a customer is hosting multiple applications under one domain, i.e. Hosting, Microsoft® SharePoint™, SQL, Microsoft® Exchange Server, etc. In this example, it would be advisable for the customer to have multiple sub-domains, i.e. www.mydomainname.com, spt.mydomainname.com, exchange.mydomainname.com, sql.mydomainname.com, etc.

Web Page Password Protection - Password protection add-on for Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) allows you to protect directories by asking browsers for their username and password using HTTP-standard Basic Authentication. The general procedure for setting up access authorization for your users is the following:

  1. Create one or more groups
  2. Set up access authorizations to directories for each group
  3. Add users to the groups.  We have a web based administration utility which allows you to create users, groups and set up access authorization.

Website Statistic/ Access to Raw Log File - We offer detailed graphical and tabular usage statistics for your website grouped by weeks, days, and hours. Using this information, you can track how many hits you are getting, where those hits are coming from, which page is the most popular, how much data transfer is occurring, and more. Access to raw log files allows you to analyze the usage using even more sophisticated programs.

Web Site Traffic - All activity served from your website constitutes data transfer. For example, every time a web page, image, midi file, mpeg video, e-mail, etc. is loaded or transferred from or to a server, data transfer is generated. All shared hosting plans include an unlimited amount of web site traffic.

Windows Media Server - Windows Media Server system is a streaming audio/video delivery system for the Internet. It is client-server based, meaning both the browser and the server must have Windows Media Server/Player components for it to work. You can create and deliver streaming multimedia content through the Internet to audiences worldwide.
